What to Expect

This trail begins at Paul da Serra, on the ER209 regional road, following the Vereda do Fanal (PR13) for the first few meters until reaching the junction towards the 25 Fontes Waterfall. The route continues downhill through a mystical landscape, surrounded by rich vegetation dominated by high-altitude heather. You may also find some endemic species, such as the grass Palha-Carga (Festuca donax), which gives the trail its name. Along the way, there are several viewpoints where you can admire the beauty of the Rabaçal area and the grandeur of the Laurissilva Forest, a UNESCO Natural Heritage Site since 1999. Upon reaching Ribeira dos Cedros, the trail follows the Levada das 25 Fontes, also known as Levada Nova do Rabaçal, towards the iconic 25 Fontes Waterfall, the highlight of this route. Before returning along the same path, take the opportunity to regain your energy while admiring the beauty of the lagoon and the impressive waterfall.
