What to Expect

This is one of those trails that has a bit of everything: from the levada to the sea and back to the mountain for a unique experience, by extraordinary paths that surprise us every kilometer. The starting point of this walk is next to the old tunnel that connects Machico to Caniçal, in one of the sections of Levada do Caniçal. The path is flat and offers magnificent views over Caniçal, a beautiful fishing village that stood out until 1982 for being the center of the whaling industry. The route of the levada ends in descending way towards the center of the town. You should go on along the levada until its end and continue along the road. Enjoy the opportunity to meet the traditions and daily routines of the residents of this area. When you reach the center of the village, you can rest a little to gain energy to continue the path along the promenade next to Praia de Natal. At the end of this promenade begins the ascent towards the Pico do Facho. The path continues on uneven terrain across the mountain. From time to time stop to see the extraordinary view that provides this perspective, not only over the village but also the Levada and the valley. When arriving at Pico do Facho, you can choose to visit the viewpoint or go down to the point of arrival of the walk, just after the old tunnel where it began.
