What to Expect
This hike starts at Ponta do Pargo in the Pedregal area and guides walkers on a fabulous trip through the nature and rural areas of the western part of Madeira Island. Start by going up on the stone path until you reach Levada, where you should turn left to go side by side with the water course. Along the way, the trail offers us extraordinary views of Ponta do Pargo, the valley and the mountains. The flora and fauna around us involves our senses and make this almost magical route. At the end of Levada, you should go down the road until you reach the Capela da Nossa Senhora da Boa Morte, where you will find a short route to an absolutely fascinating viewpoint. Spend some time watching the mountains, the sea and all the surrounding. At the bottom, on the right, stands the Achadas da Cruz area. The route continues along a forest path that will take you back to the starting point of the hike. However, along the way we recommend a short detour to discover another hidden spot in this area, offering breathtaking views, as well as a visit to the Garganta Funda Viewpoint, overlooking one of the most impressive waterfalls on the Island. After enjoying the view, resume the walk and take advantage to know a little more Ponta do Pargo, its people, rural houses and their plantations. Feel the traditions and mix them with the experience of walking through nature. The trail ends at the same starting point, but you will certainly have a completely different view than you had before you started.
