Recommended Equipment for Hiking in Madeira
Having the right gear makes all the difference for comfort and safety on Madeira's diverse terrain! Here's what we recommend:

Footwear
Bring suitable and comfortable footwear and clothing, considering the characteristics of the hike and the season of the year. While some walks can take place on a very dry and regular surface, other walks may have a more humid climate and, therefore, a more slippery floor.
Clothing
Layers are key! A waterproof and windproof jacket is a must, even on sunny days, due to sudden weather changes and potential waterfalls. If the route is more open or has more exposed parts, such as the Vereda do Pico Ruivo, Vereda do Fanal or Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço, for example, we recommend that you bring a cap and sunscreen to protect you from the sun.
Hydration & Food
Take the trail distance and length of the walk into consideration. Bring plenty of water per person. Also pack high-energy snacks like nuts, fruit, sandwiches or energy bars.
Illumination
A headlamp or flashlight is essential, especially for early morning starts or if you encounter tunnels along the Levadas.
Sun Protection
Sunglasses, sunscreen (SPF 30+), and a wide-brimmed hat are crucial for protection against Madeira's strong sun, even on cloudy days.
Other equipment
In some cases you can also bring a walking stick to help you along the walk, especially if the walk is more inclined. Bring basic first-aid supplies including bandages, antiseptic, pain relievers, and any personal medications you might need.
